Even if the Lynch targets a pass rusher in the draft, the team could still benefit from the stability and development of a veteran presence at the position.Among the top defenders slated for free agency is Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake. In today’s NFL, there typically won’t be a robust market for a 37-year-old veteran. Wake is the exception. The long-time Dolphins defender is still playing at an elite level and he’ll draw significant interest at the onset of free agency.In his tenth season, Wake totaled 36 tackles and five tackles for loss. He also added 17 quarterback hits, six sacks and a forced fumble. Wake earned an overall grade of 81.6 in 2018 from Pro Football Focus, ranking 16th out of 113 edge defenders. His 81.1 pass rush grade was even more impressive, placing him among the top 10 at his position. If the Giants were to trade up to No. 2 overall, the 49ers almost have to take that deal, knowing that New York is interested in Jones.The reason it’s great is because all this does is push the players the 49ers actually want down in the draft. I’ve been able to form some relationships here in Phoenix and let’s just say that the Cardinals GM Steve Keim is not happy that teams aren’t offering a first round pick for Josh Rosen. This has led to a “last minute panic.” There is a real possibility that—if Rosen doesn’t get traded—the team will pass on Kyler Murray. Keim is stubborn. That could ultimately work against him. Here’s where it gets fun. If Arizona were to pass on Murray, Bosa isn’t their target. As of Thursday, Keim was trying to convince the front office to select Williams.John Lynch better have his phone charged if that happens. Teams will come calling early and often if Murray is still available. Let’s say the Oakland Raiders come get Kyler. It’s believed that the New York Jets are interested in Josh Allen, as they missed out on Anthony Barr. A best case scenario is the 49ers can move down two picks and still get Bosa. I don’t think anyone would complain with that.This could all be moot if Rosen is traded for a first-rounder, or Keim softens his stance. Still, the draft is about information.
